150,000 people rise for the Dead 9-3-77

Post by dr bakes » Thu Sep 03, 2015 8:48 pm

38 years ago today, a day that will live on in infamy, my first GD show at Englishtown NJ.
I know Warlock was there, anybody else?

This thread is making me feel old. Just for the fun of it I went through my ticket collection, to find out that this was my 19th show. If one counts the Watkins Glen sound check the night before (which I don't) it would have been my 20th. The reason I don't count the sound check as a show is cause this way I can tell people I was at a sound check. Aside from remembering how good this band sounded during Eyes, other memories include Marshall Tucker playing very well, the band taking a five minute brake (which turned into a ten minute brake, but who's counting) after Samson, the Terrapin encore and not being able to get out of the parking area till the next morning. That old ok we are stuck here all night, lets make the best of it. Fun times.

The week after I got home Rolling Stone magazine came out with the center sectionwhich was an Arial photo of the Raceway with the cover proclaiming 150,000 rise for the Dead with a promotion for Terrapin Station.

Wasn't there but I would count the Watkins Glen soundcheck as a show. It's gorgeous!

Wasn't at Englishtown though many of my friends went. Still one of my favorite versions of He's Gone.

As great as Englishtown was, I still prefer the Spectrum in April. Got My Mojo Workin', a Terrapin that left sonic trails and a Playin to close the first set where the audience was feeding into a massive blue pyramid. Or so it seemed at the time!

My favorite 77 show was at the Palladium, 4/30/77. A stronger set then Englishtown, plus a Terrapin encore. Terrapin was a new song then. At the end of April the Dead played 3 nights at the Capital Theater in Passaic NJ, followed by 5 shows (in 6 nights) at the Palladium. The first MSG shows weren't until 79. The Dead seemed to prefer playing theaters, but because so many people wanted to see them, hockey arenas and football stadiums were becoming the norm. Believing that 4/30 was overall a better show, there is an unmistakable energy at Englishtown, plus the Eyes they played that night remains (in my memory) as Jerry in top form.

No question, 4/30/77 is a fine show. Did not get an encore at the Spectrum but they finished with a tremendous Terrapin and that pretty much summed up the night.

Eyes was excellent but Mississippi Half Step! Oh, my. He's Gone-> NFA -> Truckin is still one of my absolute favorite jams.
