Phil Lesh at Oregon Country Fair Today!

Post by DeadDuck » Fri Jul 12, 2019 12:22 pm

As a (the?) resident Oregonian on TN, it behooves me to introduce TN (at least, anyone here who is unfamiliar) with the Oregon Country Fair, aka OCF, aka Fair. No, this is NOT like other fairs. ...not. at. all.

I'm sure you are all familiar with the various Veneta, Oergon shows, especially the Field Trip. Those grounds are the same land where the Fair is held. This is the Fair's 50th anniversary. Today, Phil will be playing and I CAN'T WAIT!

Now, what is Fair? It's a magical place of incredible people that work year round to throw the greatest party in Oregon. Many (most?) of the vendors and volunteers live in the area and are a community-family spanning decades. They truly love this family and you can feel that love when you're there. Music, performance, artists, crafts, food, fairies, and magic, and it's all in the forest. A forest, mind you, that is a preserved woodland space. The nonprofit (partly run by the Kesey family) is careful to steward the land.

I suggest you peruse the website thoroughly to get a sense of what it is.

Someday, do yourself a favor and come enjoy the Fair. Thank me later.

Darn, was so busy with the tour that this didn’t hit my radar screen. Omg.

Everything DeadDuck says is true. I went to 82 Veneta. The country fair is a true bastion of hippiedom.

Sadly I am leaving Portland right now. So close. Have fun!!!!!

I was all set for Veneta in '92. Had tix that read "The Merry Pranksters present the Grateful Dead," had a round trip plane ticket and a rented car, I even had a room booked for a week at the Eugene Hilton. Then of course Jerry's health failed and the show was canceled. Sorry I had to miss it but I do still have those tickets somewhere.

A friend of mine was there for the Phil early show, she said there were A LOT of people to see Phil. She said it was pretty good.

When the fair closes to the general public, it continues on in the evening for the workers and friends and family of the fair. Phil played a small show for those people, which is a pretty neat thing to do.

The post-sweep night is just incredible. The general public is able to enjoy the Fair from 11-7 (8, really). The sweep clears the general public and the night time is for anyone who works a booth, or works/volunteers for the Fair. They camp onsite the entire weekend and when the grounds are closed off at night it turns into the most insane party. People spend the entire year preparing cool outfits and antics for the simple purpose of being part of the oddity for others.

Because of the enormous crowd that showed up on Friday, the volunteers/workers were all told to stay away from Main Stage during Phil, otherwise it would have been too crowded for the general public. So, they got their own show later in the evening.

Setlist for the general public show:

Bird Song>
New Speedway
TN Jed
Jack Straw
Like A Rolling Stone
Dirty Business? (not familiar with this song)
Tossin Rocks
St Steve>
Whole lotta love>
St Steve>
Nfa

Well, I took a bunch of pictures, but I still can't seem to attach them from my phone. Seems the files are too large.

Unfortunately, I was not working there this year and didn't get the privilege of camping there. So, I didn't catch the later show. Haven't been able to connect with any friends, yet, that did get to see it. If I get that setlist, I'll pass it on.

Dirty Business? (not familiar with this song)
Was it the NRPS song perhaps? Wasn't there, but would love for Phil to bring out some of those old gems.

Well the marshall came to town
And his hat was pulled way down
He looked like he had business on his mind
He didn't stop to say
He just rode along his way
‘Til he stopped in at the office of the mine
Dirty business, dirty business
Dirty business down in coal creek
Dirty business down in coal creek
This morning
Well, I make two bucks a day
And that ain't a healthy pay
My kids are just beginning to get sick
There's talk been goin' round
How they're gonna shut it down
If the man don't come and fix things
Pretty quick
repeat Pretty soon there was a crowd
It was getting' pretty loud
And the men all said there'd be no work today
But the owner wouldn't budge
He just sat there like a judge
And he wouldn't give a nickel more in pay
Dirty business, dirty business
Dirty business down in coal creek
Dirty business down in coal creek
This morning
Just then they heard the sound
That rumbled from the ground
And everyone was rushing for the door
The dust came pouring out
And it finally left no doubt
